Pistols and Shotguns: A Comparison
Guns are weapons that are made of a metal tube from which a missile or projectile is shot using the force of gunpowder or some other propellant. Nowadays, guns are referred to as the big guns, such as cannons; small military arms such as the rifles, machine guns, and pistols; and nonmilitary firearms such as the shotguns.
With regards physical characteristics, pistols are small firearm designed to be held, operated and fired with one hand while shotguns are firearms that are usually designed to be fired from the shoulder. Compared to pistols, shotguns are heavier while pistols are lighter. In comparison to long guns like rifles and shotguns, pistols are smaller while shotguns are larger. Pistols are easier to carry because they are small guns compared to shotguns which are long.
Speaking of their maneuverability, shotguns are not easy to maneuver in close quarters. An attacker in close distance from the defender could wrestle a shotgun easily because of its long muzzle, while a pistol is difficult to grab because of its size. Shotguns are easier for most shooters to hit with because a shooter is generally more accurate with a long gun than with a handgun. Using a handgun requires one hand whereas long guns often require both, that leaves a handgun user with a free hand. In addition, handguns can be used ambidextrously meaning, switching from one hand to the other, and therefore the user can switch firing hands depending on the situation.
About its effect; shotguns are generally much more powerful than pistols. Many rifles are able to achieve bullet velocities of over 3,000 feet per second, but rounds for handguns are rarely capable of achieving velocities over 1,500 feet per second. Therefore, long guns are generally more powerful at any range, and especially more effective at longer ranges than handguns. But handguns are often considered self-defense weapons for use at close range.
Shotguns are generally perceived as more intimidating that’s why they are often used in roadblock situations where police are seen blocking a highway to search cars for suspects. In the US, law enforcement agencies often use riot shotguns especially for crowd dispersion and riot control.
Shotguns are not as heavily regulated by laws as handguns are. There are more laws made on pistols regulating their ownership because of their compact size, low cost, and ease of operation making them a common weapon in violent crime.
